A Mac that won't start up is an infuriating problem. If using more than one monitor in a "daisy chain", unplug all monitors and test using just one. Before this problem occured I didn't install anything new (no driver, no update...), just read some blogs.

If the Mac does start up, restart it from the Apple menu once the desktop finishes loading completely. The Genius we worked with (Adam) could get Julian’s Mac to boot in Recovery mode, as we had, and we were able to copy the other files from it. I share this with my wife and kids, so the stress level is mounting. Apple says to let it restart just the one time; I usually listen for a second reboot, and then release the keys.
